Techni-Ice has created a gel-ice pack. It is larger than a regular dry ice brick, and flexible. It cools to the temperature of a freezer (not as cold as dry ice, though capable of cooling to a similar temperature), but the cooling effects last much longer. It is also reusable — for those who would be comfortable reusing it after being used to cool a dead body. And it is also less expensive than dry ice (initial number and replacement over 2-4 days) — although at present, it has to be ordered in advance. I have not seen any ‘green’ elements to its production, and it is made in Australia and the shipping must be considered — but is reusable.
I have not used it myself, but am waiting for a sample to test how it functions. I can’t speak for the main distribution site, but the Canadian distributors are willing to send samples.
